Safe Acne Treatment During Pregnancy

Each pregnant woman is different.  Some women that already had acne, pregnancy and acne can make it worse, and there are others that may have great skin.  Hopefully that’s the case for you!  If you already had acne before becoming pregnant, acne and pregnancy may cause more acne breakouts.  Both of these are very common.  The reason you’re more prone to acne during pregnancy is because of fluctuating hormone levels, but there are hormonal acne treatments that are safe and will help.  Acne during pregnancy usually settles down after the first trimester.  Acne treatment during pregnancy doesn’t have to be difficult.  It’s a matter of having the information you need so you can be sure you’re getting a safe acne treatment during pregnancy.

Acne Clear Free Skin Treatment

Don’t think that an acne clear free skin treatment product is safe just because it’s all natural or organic.  These products can still have unsafe ingredients for your baby.  Essential oil acne treatments can also be dangerous, because the oils are absorbed into your skin and body.

Some of the best acne clear free skin treatments and acne natural product treatments during pregnancy are:

acne treatment during pregnancy

  • Clay based products.  Clay draws impurities and oils from the pores and removes dead skin cells that clog pores.
  • Facials are very helpful, whether you do them at home or outside of the home.  If you can do a facial each week, every other week, or at least monthly, it will help reduce your acne and improve the health and looks of your skin dramatically. Weekly is the best.  I’ve listed some natural acne facial treatments and masks below.
  • Daily skin cleansing regimen including cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, toning and protecting your skin.  Exfoliating is very important because it keeps your pores clear and removes dirt, bacteria and other unhealthy and foreign toxins.  More information on this is also below.
  • Adjusting your diet helps A LOT.  If you have foods with antioxidants, they help fight the free radicals, which cause diseases like acne.
    • Food items like fruit such as berries, olives and cantaloupe all have powerful antioxidants.  Dark green vegetables, extra virgin olive oil and salmon all contain strong antioxidants.  Whole grains and prunes are healthy for you, and some dairy, but not too much.

Your skin will start to look better, you’ll be healthier physically, and this type of diet is also good for the baby!

  • Drinking a lot of water is Essential in your overall health, your skin health and the baby’s health.  It cleans all of the toxins from your system and hydrates it, which is very important.  It keeps your system and organs clean, hydrated, and in top condition, so it sends only the ‘good stuff’ to your baby.
  • Exercising is actually good for your skin as well as your overall health.  It helps your circulation which improves your health and the baby’s health.  There are safe exercises to do during pregnancy, but that’s something I’ll write about separately.
  • Keep your stress level as low as possible.  It’s not only healthier for you and your baby, but stress also increases endorphins, which produce more oil.

You need to avoid acne free clear skin treatment products with ingredients like:

benzoyl peroxide acne treatment

  • Benzoyl peroxide acne treatment
  • Glycolic acid acne treatment
  • Salicylic acid acne treatment

Research shows they may be linked to birth defects. Better safe than sorry.

  • Retin A
  • Accutane
  • Differin
  • Tazorac
  • Tetracycline

Some safe ingredients to use with acne and pregancy are:

  • Lactic acid which is from milk
  • Fruit acid from acidic fruits

Both gently exfoliate dead skin cells.  Lactic acid is also in your body naturally, so it’s one of the safest ingredients for acne treatment during pregnancy.

Some natural acne facial treatments that can help are:

Oatmeal Facial Mask

1 egg white
1/2 cup cooked instant oatmeal
1 teaspoon olive oil
Few drops of lemon juice

  • Mix until smooth and spread it around on your face
  • Leave it on for 15 — 30 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water

Tea Tree Oil acne treatment.  It’s a strong anti bacterial that doesn’t disturb the skin’s natural balance.  Add some water to avoid irritation

  • Dip a cotton swab into the tea tree oil, then into clean warm water
  • Apply the tea tree oil mixture onto the blemish areas

    natural acne facial treatments

Baking soda scrub.  It’s a non abrasive scrub that effectively sloughs off dead skin, excess oils and impurities, and helps keep the pores of the skin clear.  Since it’s very alkaline, it can kill candida bacteria, a major contributor to acne that’s resistant to traditional benzoyl peroxide treatments which you don’t want to use anyway if you’re pregnant.

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a dab of water
  • Mix it in your palm until it’s a soft paste
  • Gently massage it onto your face in small circular movements
  • Rinse with warm water after about 30 seconds

Red Clay and Apple Cidar Vinegar Mask.  Leave it on overnight, and the next day it can be almost gone or significantly improved

Toothpaste.  Yes, toothpaste will reduce acne!

Cornstarch or Baby Powder.  A light dusting will help reduce acne

Another helpful hint to reduce or avoid stretch marks is to rub oil on your skin, particularly after a bath or shower.  I used this myself when I got Huge, and only had 3–4 stretch marks.  I’ve heard extra virgin olive oil is great for this, but it can be costly if you use much.  If you do this regularly and consistently after a bath or shower, it will make a Big difference.

Daily Skin Cleansing Routine:

A recommended cleansing routine for pregnant women is to:

  • Wash your face 2 — 3 times a day with a mild oil free, fragrance free cleanser
  • Rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water to get rid of residue and gently pat your face dry with a clean paper towel
  • Use a good exfoliator
  • If you use astringents, use a non medicated astringent
  • Apply an oil free moisturizer

Don’t over wash.  This can dry your skin or actually make it more oily depending on your skin type

Don’t touch your skin or pimples because it spreads the bacteria

Use clean cotton balls or sponges for makeup, skin toning products, etc.

Some DO’s and DONT’s:
