Antibiotics for acne-long term effects?
June 5th, 2009 | Author: JulieLast year, my doctor prescribed me a common, light antibiotic called doxycyclin hydrate (I think) for acne and it worked like a charm; not a single visible pimple on my face for the 3 months I used it, but my parents canceled the prescription because out of paranoia. So are there any harmful or damaging effects of long term use(1 year ) of antibiotics like these?

Youre fine.
I was recently taken off Accutane about 9 months ago, and i started to have flare ups of acne.
I started taking some antibiotics that i had from a recent infection left over, and it cleared it all up overnight.
A few days later, i went to my dermatologist and asked him to put me on a low dose daily of antibiotics to keep the acne away,a and we discussed the possibilities of any negative side effects, and he re-assured me that i would be fine.
The only possible problem is that the acne strain becomes resistant to the antibiotics, in which case, a different antibiotic could be administered, yet that is highly unlikely to be required.
But when long term antibiotics like doxycyclinre are given there are possible serious side effects which have to be known by the patient.
For example doxycycline can cause exfoliative dermatitis, visual disturbances which may be indicative of intracranial hypertension, hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis and blood dyscrasias.
But if you regularily visit the doctor if any of these occur he can diagnose early and prevent the progress of the complication.
Such complications wont occur in every body.
